What is The Lore Valley?
Long, long ago, in the year 2004, I realized I wasn’t being productive enough with my life. So I decided to set myself upon the task of writing one of the myriad stories floating around in my muddled brain, and the first one I chose to work on was called Tales of the Lore Valley. My goal was to write the first in what would be a sprawling epic, with different – yet intertwining – plots, that all took place in a world centered around a land known as the Lore Valley. The first set of stories would be about The Wind Riders, a group of ‘pirates’ who learned how to make flying airships that they used to harry the evil despots who ruled the giant, walled cities nearby.
I wrote the first book, Tales of the Lore Valley: The Wind Riders, in early 2004 and self-published it for around $300. I was very proud of myself at the time, since writing an entire book (even though it was only 9 chapters) seemed to be quite an accomplishment. I then immediately got to work on the sequel, Tales of the Lore Valley: The Montsernan Agreement, which I finished shortly after the first one.
It was while working on the third book, Betrayal of the Order, that I ran into some issues with plotting and structure, and during the downtime I had to make the humbling decision to stop working on these books temporarily. I didn’t think at the time that my writing was strong enough to really do these stories justice, and I needed to refine my craft. That’s when I went to work on a number of other projects, mostly to satiate my own curiosity, but also to get better as a writer. Now, 6-7 years later, I’m ready to dive back in to this world and show you, our readers, what the Lore Valley is all about.
Although the first two books were self-published, and are available on amazon (among other sites), I’ve decided to take another pass at each of these books, apply the lessons I’ve learned over the past few years, and polish them up. The first book will go back up in early 2013. The second may happen a few months later. Ideally I’ll be putting out a new book every year or so, during breaks between anything else I may be working on, but I’m definitely excited to be working on this story again, and I look forward to getting it in front of more readers.
A note about the art:
The first time around I managed to not only make some maps for this world, but also solicited some artwork that made its way into the second book. I’ve put some of that up on the Maps & Artwork page for you to view, but I’m always eager to get more. So if you have any art skills that you want to show off, let me know and we can get your work up here for people to see.
